The scrum-half was outstanding in his side’s recent victory
Highly-rated Welsh scrum-half Dan Hiscocks has signed a new contract with English Championship outfit Cornish Pirates, putting an end to speculation he could be returning to Wales.
The 23-year-old is a former Wales age-grade international and in a recent interview with WalesOnline outlined his hopes of signing for a Welsh club in the future and representing his country in the long-run, but for now he will be staying in the English Championship where he is considered one of the best attacking number nines around.
Hiscocks was outstanding in his side’s 33-31 victory over Chinnor last Saturday, scoring a stunning individual try from just outside of his 22 and was the architect of another with a beautiful cross-kick for Matt McNab to score at the corner.
Welsh rugby is currently short of quality scrum-halves so it would be a surprise if one of Wales’ professional clubs – Cardiff, Dragons, Ospreys and Scarlets – didn’t at least take a close look at Hiscocks.
“I try to focus on having really good basics,” he told WalesOnline in January. Sign up to Inside Welsh rugby on Substack to get exclusive news stories and insight from behind the scenes in Welsh rugby.
“I’ve got a strong pass, a strong kick and being a good communicator. Things like that are probably things I’ve worked hard on.
“They are things that are underestimated in a game. If you are not paying much attention and are just watching as a bit of a social you don’t see those type of things.
“I’d like to say those are my biggest strengths. That passing game and that kicking game.
“I’ve also been a lot more confident in my running game of late because when you are not getting as many minutes you don’t want to try things as much. That’s something I’ve worked on.
“The big thing for me is being that calming voice and head who can just nail his basics and help get the team on the front foot.”
Despite signing a new contract with the Pirates, Hiscock retains his ambition of playing for Wales and it is unlikely the club would stand in his way were he to receive an offer from one of the Welsh clubs or a Gallagher Premiership outfit.
“I want to play at the highest level and I’d like to play for Wales one day,” he said. Join WalesOnline Rugby’s WhatsApp Channel here to get the breaking news sent straight to your phone for free
“That’s always been my aspiration and what I’ve always wanted to do. I think the biggest thing I need to do at the moment is enjoy my rugby and make sure I turn up every day working hard and playing well consistently.
“The big aspiration is to get an opportunity higher up whether that’s in the Premiership or whether that’s coming back to a Welsh region.
“Although I’m English qualified all I’ve wanted to do since I was a kid was play for Wales. That is my ultimate goal.”
