Shubman Gill hits a double ton in the Edgbaston Test
Gill had a very poor record in overseas Test matches before he was named as the captain of the Indian team, and questions were raised over his appointment.
However, the captaincy has suited Gill a lot, and he has completely transformed himself as a batter since taking over the leadership.
In his debut innings as skipper at Headingley in Leeds, he slammed an excellent century and took his performance to the next level in the second Test match.
Gill looked in unbelievable control during the Edgbaston Test and made life hell for the English bowlers. He slammed a fantastic 269 runs off 387 balls, with 30 fours and 3 sixes to help India register a colossal score.
With his double ton, Gill broke Virat Kohli’s record for the highest score by an Indian Test captain and became the second youngest Indian captain to hit a Test double-hundred.
Shubman Gill follows up double ton with a hundred in the Edgbaston Test
Gill wasn’t satisfied with his double ton in the first innings and followed it up with a remarkable century in the second innings off 129 balls.
With a double century and a century in the same Test match, Shubman Gill has become only the second Indian batter after Sunil Gavaskar to achieve this feat.
Also, he is just second batter to achieve the feat in the World Test Championship after Marnus Labuschagne. Overall, Gill has become the third batter in cricket history to score 250 and a hundred in the same Test after Graham Gooch and Kumar Sangakkara.
Speaking on Sky Sports Cricket after Gill reached the three-figure mark in the second innings, Nasser Hussain said:
“Finds the gap, takes the single. A hundred in the first Test, a double hundred, and a hundred in the second. The Indian captain is in the form of his life. Sunil Gavaskar the only other Indian to score a century and a double in the same Test. Gill has been chanceless and elegant in both innings.”
Here’s how X reacted to Shubman Gill’s sensational performance in the Edgbaston Test:
269 followed by a century in the next innings. He looked very hungry for more runs right from the first ball. What a performance by Shubman Gill. 👏#ENGvIND
