Southampton on the hunt for new head coach after Russell Martin dismissal

Southampton parted ways with manager Russell Martin following their 5-0 defeat to Tottenham, which left the club nine points adrift of safety in the Premier League.

The 38-year-old had successfully led the Saints back to the Premier League last season, clinching promotion with a memorable play-off final victory over Leeds at Wembley.

However, this campaign has been a stark contrast, with Southampton enduring a torrid run of form, losing 13 of their 16 league matches so far.

The team’s only league win this season came against Everton in November, and they have struggled to find the net, managing just 11 goals – the lowest tally in the division.

In a statement, Southampton said: “Going into the start of the season, we all knew the challenges that we would face this year as we readjusted to life in the top flight, competing in the best and most competitive league in the world.

“However, the reality of our situation is clear. The board have supported Russell and his staff and been open and transparent regarding our expectations.

“We would like to take this opportunity to thank Russell and his staff for all the hard work and dedication they have given the club on and off the pitch over the last 18 months.

“Everyone connected with Southampton FC will always have fantastic memories of last season, especially the play-off final win in May.”

Simon Rusk, the club’s Under-21s manager, has been named interim head coach and will oversee the senior team starting with their Carabao Cup quarter-final clash against Premier League leaders Liverpool on Wednesday.

Martin’s departure coincides with another managerial exit in the Premier League, as Wolves also announced the sacking of Gary O’Neil on the same day.

Southampton’s struggles in the top flight this season have underscored the difficulties of adjusting to life back in the Premier League, and the club will now look for a fresh direction to reignite their survival hopes.
