Schjelderup goal ‘perfect’ for Portuguese side at 2025 Club World Cup

Norway newcomer Andreas Schjelderup put Benfica on course to top Group C at the 2025 Club World Cup ahead of opponents Bayern Munich with a cool early finish on Matchday 3 in Charlotte.

Left-winger Schjelderup, 21, arrived inside the box to slot a low right-footed finish past goalkeeper Manuel Neuer from Fredrik Aursnes’s cross in the 13th minute at the Bank of America Stadium.

“It’s great work from Aursnes, overlapping [Angel] Di Maria,” Antalyaspor and former England winger Andros Townsend told DAZN.

“It’s a very good finish on his weaker foot. He sees it all the way, the concentration on his face. I thought the counter-attack would come from the left but the right-hand side is really giving Benfica joy, with Aursnes and [Angel] Di Maria overlapping.”

Benfica vs Bayern Munich

The group winners from the group will face the runners-up from Group D – containing Flamengo, Chelsea, Esperance and LAFC – with the second-placed team meeting the table-toppers from that section.

Bayern, who were guaranteed to progress before kick-off, left the likes of England captain and 2024/25 Bundesliga top scorer Harry Kane on the bench, while Benfica knew they were certain to go through with a point.

“This is perfect for Benfica,” suggested Townsend. “Now they don’t have to go chasing. They can sit in their two banks or four or five [in defence and midfield] and just invite Bayern to play through or go around them.

“It’s going to be so tough for [Bayern] to break it down. A switch of play coulsd be the way to do it, from left to right before the low block gets across. [Josip] Stanisic has tried it a few times but not got the ball right.”

2025 Club World Cup: Benfica, Bayern on course

Schjelderup’s first goal of the finals was Benfica’s ninth of the group stage and the second Bayern had conceded in the US following two opening wins.

“Benfica are defending very well,” said Townsend. “[Leroy] Sane can’t get any space. There is a long way to go and you’ve got to remember the attacking talent Vincent Kompany has got on the bench in wide areas: [Kingsley] Koman, [Michael] Olise, Kane.

“If Bayern can keep possession, tire Benfica and bring those players on in the last 20 to 30 minutes, it could spell trouble.”

In the simultaneous Matchday 3 game in the group, 20-year-old goalkeeper Nathan Garrow’s 26th-minute own goal gave Boca the lead in Nashville against Auckland, who lost 10-0 to Bayern and 6-0 to Benfica.

Should those results stay the same, the Brazilian club will exit the competition in third, two points behind Bayern.
