The Samoan Rugby Union have appointed former captain and World Cup fly-half Lemalu Tusiata Pisi as the new head coach of Manu Samoa.
Lemalu Tusiata Pisi, better known as Tusi Pisi in the rugby world, has been promoted from the role of assistant coach.
As a skills and backs coach, Pisi helped prepare the team for the 2023 World Cup, and he was a member of the Manu Samoa coaching team at the 2024 Pacific Nations Cup.
The 42-year-old is currently coaching with Japanese Second Division outfit, Toyota Industries Shuttles Rugby Aichi.
Pisi said in a statement: “I acknowledge the Chairman and Board, CEO and Management for the trust placed in me to lead Manu Samoa. I accept this role as Head Coach with humility, knowing that true strength lies not in one person but in the unity of our people.
“As the proverb says, ‘the tree and the canoe are bound as one.’ Together, we will carve our legacy with the same grit, faith, and fire that flows in the blood of our ancestors. To our players, supporters, and Sons of Samoa around the world-let us rise as one. Our journey continues.”
Pisi enjoyed a distinguished playing career, which saw him win three caps for the Pacific Islanders in 2006 and 42 for Samoa, from 2011 to 2019, including appearances at three World Cups.
He also played Super Rugby for the Crusaders and the Hurricanes and at the top level of club rugby in Japan (Suntory Sungoliath), France (Toulon) and England (Bristol).
During the match against South Africa at RWC 2015, he and his brothers, George and Ken, made history by becoming the first trio of brothers to play in the same World Cup match.
In the same tournament, Pisi converted his own try and kicked three penalties in a near-miss against Scotland, who will be his first opponents as coach of Manu Samoa, at Eden Park on July 18.
Tusi will then be tasked with qualifying Samoa for the 2027 World Cup. With Fiji and Japan having already qualified, Samoa only need to avoid finishing last at this year’s Pacific Nations Cup, which also features Tonga, Canada and USA, to claim one of the Oceania tickets.
