Northampton Saints No.8 Juarno Augustus’ form has not gone unnoticed this season after being included in Rassie Erasmus’ 54-man South Africa squad for their alignment camp later this month.
The uncapped former South Africa U20 international, 27, has received his first call-up to an alignment camp alongside Sharks flanker Vincent Tshituka and Cheetahs rookie Ntokozo Makhaza.
With the camp taking place on May 22 and 23 in Cape Town, the day before Augustus will feature in the Investec Champions Cup final in Cardiff, the bruising ball-carrier will attend the camp remotely alongside 17 other overseas players.
Augustus, Tshituka and Makhaza will be joined by five other uncapped players in the camp: Renzo du Plessis, Neethling Fouche, Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Marnus van der Merwe, and Cobus Wiese.
A potential European cup win and a first Bok cap would cap a remarkable season for Augustus, who has signed for Ulster ahead of next season.
Injuries to Frans Malherbe, Elrigh Louw, Ben-Jason Dixon, Deon Fourie and Trevor Nyakane have meant that the quintet will not be part of the camp.
“This is an exciting bunch of players who have all made their mark in their respective competitions this season, and we are thrilled to invite a few talented new players to the camp,” head coach Erasmus said.
“They have all made a strong statement in big competitions under immense pressure at times, so we are looking forward to working with them.
“It’s always difficult to reduce the size of the squad with the abundance of talent in South African rugby, but we were limited in the number of players we could select for the camp, and we are confident that we have sufficient cover in all positions within this group.”
