Indian cricket team captain Rohit Sharma has set the record straight regarding speculations about his retirement from Test cricket following his absence from the final Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG).
Rohit Sharma on retirement talks
Rohit’s decision to miss the Sydney Test has been one of the most talked-about topics in the cricketing world over the past few days. In an interview with Star Sports during the lunch break on Day 2 of the Test, the Indian star clarified that he is not retiring from the longest format. He emphasized his poor form as the sole reason for his absence, negating any notions of an impending retirement.
“This is not a decision of retirement. I am not moving away from this game. But I took a decision to step away from this game because I was not able to score runs with the bat,” said Rohit.
Current form and future in Test cricket
Rohit has struggled with the bat in the current series against Australia, managing only 31 runs in five innings, signaling a significant dip in his performance. Despite this, he remains optimistic about his future in the format, showcasing his belief in his potential to bounce back while acknowledging the unpredictable nature of cricket.
“There is no guarantee that I will score runs 2 months or 5 months from now. I have seen a lot of cricket, every minute, every second and everyday life changes. I believe that things will change but at the same time, I have to be realistic as well,” added Rohit.

Rohit hits out at critics
The cricket community, including fans and former players, had been speculating wildly about Rohit’s future, especially after reports suggested conversations with BCCI officials and selectors about retirement. However, these rumors were put to rest when the Nagpur-born cricketer hit out at the critics, stating that he had played the game for a really long time and knew what he was doing and people sitting in the commentary box or analyzing his game will not decide his future.
“People sitting in the commentary box, or writing with a laptop in their hands, will not decide how my life goes. I have played the game for so long, that they will not decide when I play, how I play, when I captain, or when I step down. I am a sensible person, a mature person, father of 2 kids, I have some brain, and I know what I want from my life,” the Indian captain added further.
