Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has pitched for the inclusion of a young batter from Gujarat Titans (GT) in Team India’s squad for the upcoming five-match Test series in England. With the national side aiming to bounce back from a 3-1 series defeat in Australia earlier this year, Shastri believes it’s time to introduce new energy into the red-ball lineup.

The player in question is none other than Sai Sudharsan, who has impressed with his consistent performances and mature approach at the crease. Speaking on The ICC Review, Shastri backed the 23-year-old as a strong candidate for India’s Test plans.
“Sai Sudharsan strikes me as a player built for all forms of the game. He’s composed, technically solid, and has a hunger for big runs. My eyes are firmly on him,” said Shastri.
Though Sudharsan has already featured in India’s white-ball setup, he is yet to receive a Test cap. His ongoing form in IPL 2025 has been particularly eye-catching, further cementing his case for red-ball selection. With 456 runs in 9 games, Sudarsan is the second-highest run-getter this season.

Experience in English conditions a key factor
One of Sudharsan’s significant assets, according to Shastri, is his familiarity with English conditions. The Tamil Nadu batter represented Surrey in the County Championship during 2023 and 2024, compiling 281 runs from five matches, including a century and a half-century.
Moreover, Sudharsan boasts consistent domestic performances in first-class cricket — with 1957 runs from 29 matches at an average nearing 40. His standout moment came in the 2024-25 Ranji Trophy when he hammered a double century against Delhi.
“Being a left-hander who understands English conditions, and with that technique, he’s right up there in my list of players who can break into the side,” added Shastri.
