Former Sale Sharks and Worcester Warriors tighthead Nick Schonert has signed for Vannes ahead of next season, who will be playing in France’s Pro D2 after their relegation from the Top 14.
The 33-year-old ended his four-year stint at Sale in April by mutual consent, having had limited game time in his comeback season following surgery on his Achilles the campaign before.
He was snapped up by Japan Rugby League One outfit Mitsubishi Sagamihara Dynaboars later that month, only to be a member of their departures list two weeks later having not played a game.
The South African-born prop came close to England honours under Eddie Jones during his seven years with Worcester, qualifying through his English grandmother. However, a ruptured tendon in his hand ruled him out of England’s tour of Argentina in 2017, and he was forced to withdraw from England’s autumn camp in 2018 through injury too. He did represent England against the Barbarians in 2018.
Schonert’s move to Vannes will see him create a propping partnership that might very well have formed in England colours under Jones, with loosehead Mako Vunipola currently at the club.
“I’m very excited to be joining Rugby Club Vannes,” Schonert said. “I’m so grateful to be able to play in such a passionate place. The atmosphere, the fans, the vibe at Stade de la Rabine seems incredible. I can’t wait to give my all for this jersey and achieve our goals with my team-mates.”
Vannes have already recruited Scotland hooker Dave Cherry for the upcoming campaign in Pro D2, where they will look to bounce back to France’s top tier.
