Not a great time. I think this was gettable – Pat Cummins
Bowling first in the match, SRH were not at their best and they allowed KKR to register a huge score of 200/6 on the board. Chasing the target, the SRH batting unit failed miserably and they got all out for 120 in 16.4 overs to face their biggest loss in the Indian Premier League history.
Speaking to broadcasters after the match, SRH skipper Pat Cummins looked quite disappointed and said that the target was gettable. Cummins stated:
“Not a great time. I think this was gettable, pretty good wicket. Left too many in the field and then fell well short in the end.”
Pat Cummins slammed the SRH batting unit for the first time, saying that they need to set realistic expectations as failing three matches in a row is not a good sign. He said:
“We need to be realistic, three games in a row it hasn’t come off for us. We need to maybe look back at whether we could have chosen better options. Our batters are best when they take the game on, but looking back maybe we could have taken different options.”
It was mainly our fielding – Pat Cummins
SRH’s fielding in the match against KKR was quite poor and Pat Cummins openly blamed it for the defeat. He said:
“(On what went wrong) It was mainly our fielding, overall bowling wasn’t bad. We should have taken a few catches and stopped them a bit earlier.”
Pat Cummins in the end revealed the reason behind not playing Adam Zampa and talked about his formula to deal with the thrashing loss. He said:
“(On Adam Zampa not playing) We only bowled 3 overs of spin, the ball wasn’t gripping for us too. So opted to go without him.”
“(On how he will deal with this loss) I will probably address it on whether we could have used different options, but don’t want to dwell too much on it. We go back to a venue we know so well now.”
How did SRH perform in the previous IPL match against KKR?
Sunrisers Hyderabad’s previous match against the Kolkata Knight Riders was in the final of the IPL 2024 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chepauk, Chennai. SRH had a night to forget as they crumbled under pressure and faced an 8-wicket loss in the match.
Opting to bat first, SRH struggled right from the start, with Travis Head falling for a golden duck and Abhishek Sharma being dismissed by a Mitchell Starc beauty.
The middle order failed to stabilize the innings, as wickets kept falling at regular intervals. Aiden Markram (20) and Pat Cummins (24) were the only ones who batted decently, but SRH never found any momentum.
SRH were put under tremendous pressure by Mitchell Starc, Vaibhav Arora, Andre Russell, Varun Chakravarthy, Sunil Narine, and Harshit Rana, and they were bowled out for just 113 in 18.3 overs—the lowest total ever in an IPL final.
Defending a modest score, SRH needed 3-4 early breakthroughs, but their bowlers couldn’t find that. Pat Cummins managed to dismiss Sunil Narine, while Shahbaz Ahmed trapped Rahmanullah Gurbaz lbw, but by then, the game was already out of reach. Venkatesh Iyer’s whirlwind 52* ensured KKR cruised to victory in just 10.3 overs.
