Still in search of defensive reinforcements, Newcastle United are now reportedly “calling constantly” for updates in the race to sign one particular £55m centre-back ahead of the summer.
Newcastle transfer news
The Magpies have once again sat on the fringes of Champions League qualification so far this season and their lack of progress should come as no surprise. Limited by PSR, they’ve been forced to miss out on the fun of reinforcements in the last two windows and leave Eddie Howe to find internal solutions for any injury issues.
The frustration for Howe and those at St James’ Park will be that their strongest 11 is more than capable of earning a Champions League place. It wasn’t so long ago that Fabian Schar and Sven Botman’s partnership was being applauded as one of the best in the league, with the likes of Lewis Hall since adding to an impressive backline.

This would certainly grab headlines…
Meanwhile, a midfield three of Bruno Guimaraes, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton needs little introduction behind Anthony Gordon, Alexander Isak and surprise star Jacob Murphy. But, just how many times that strongest 11 are available for selection at once is another question entirely and the Magpies particularly need stronger defensive depth.
The Tyneside club seem to be well aware of that too. According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are “calling constantly” for updates on the race to sign Dean Huijsen from Bournemouth this summer.
The central defender has enjoyed an excellent debut campaign in the Premier League since swapping Juventus for the South Coast and is now reportedly on the radar of clubs such as Liverpool, Arsenal and Newcastle.
Romano told his YouTube channel: “So, Bayern are also following the situation of the player, but now the focus is on extending the contract of Dayot Upamecano, the conversations are advancing very well, so the expectation is for Upamecano to sign a new deal.
“Also Newcastle are informed, calling constantly about the situation of Huijsen. So for sure there will be many clubs in the race for this player.”
£55m Huijsen is one to watch
A player with a reported £55m release clause, Huijsen will undoubtedly be one to watch when the summer transfer window arrives and one that Newcastle should do everything to sign.
The Magpies will be kicking themselves after missing out on the chance to sign the 19-year-old for just over £10m last summer, but have a second chance to make up for that mistake in the coming months – albeit at a higher price.
Dubbed “phenomenal” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig for his performance over Newcastle earlier this season, Howe should already be well aware of Huijsen’s quality.
Whilst the price of £55m may not seem like a bargain at this stage, there’s still plenty more to come from Huijsen who is just 19 years old and taking the Premier League by storm.
