Matt Philip has signed with the NSW Waratahs on a two-year deal, returning to Australia at the end of the Japanese season.
The towering 6’7, 115kg forward says a shot at the British and Irish Lions series and push for a spot at the 2027 Rugby World Cup on home soil were key to his decison making.
“Playing for the Waratahs in front of my family and friends at home week in, week out. That’s something I’ve never got to do in my career,” he told reporters about his motivations.
“A home World Cup is huge. I think the World Cup, last time we had it there, is something that got me really passionate and motivated about rugby when I was young.
“To be a part of that, I think it’s an easy decision for players to come back, personally.”
The 31-year-old lock, who has previously played for the Western Force and Melbourne Rebels. He grew up in New South Wales and spent time in the Waratahs Academy, but never played for his home state at a senior level.
