Matheus Cunha has described being given Manchester United’s legendary number 10 shirt as a “privilege” following his big-money move to Old Trafford.
The Brazilian midfielder, who joined United from Wolves last month in a £62.5 million deal, received his new shirt after linking up with the squad for pre-season training this week.
He has snatched the iconic number away from Marcus Rashford, who is also back at Carrington, but looks destined for a move away from Manchester this summer.
Rashford had a falling out with head coach Ruben Amorim during the 2024-25 season, and was sent on loan to Aston Villa.
It looks incredibly difficult for the England international to make his comeback for the club he grew up at, hence Cunha being given his shirt.
Speaking to the club’s official website, the 26-year-old shared his excitement and appreciation for being handed one of the most prestigious numbers in football.
“Yeah, wow! It’s something that you always dream about,” Cunha said.

“I can mention many players that use this shirt. It’s so easy for me. Of course, I think the one that I always think about when I see this number in this shirt for me was Wayne Rooney.
“He was someone that I grew up to watch play and I have (watched) many games now. Then I swapped shirts with Marcus (Rashford, after a game) also. I have his shirt in my home. But, of course, we know many players used this shirt – Van Nistelrooy, Ibrahimovic,” he added.
“It’s the dream not only to use the shirt, but with all the history they have around the number, it’s something beautiful that I have the privilege to do.”
Cunha is no stranger to the number, having worn it at Wolves during his most prolific season to date, where he scored 15 Premier League goals. However, he acknowledged that wearing it at Manchester United carries a new level of expectation.
“This is the most important,” he said.
“I don’t know, with every single number, it will be a pleasure to use the shirt. But, yeah, with this one it’s something different. Then, of course, the responsibility is coming and I hope I can do everything like goals, assists and help the team. So this is kind of a very important point for my position.”
