Rassie Erasmus’ second-row options for the Springboks in 2025 have been boosted by Lood de Jager’s return to action after a seven-month injury layoff.
According to Rapport, the 32-year-old lock featured in a practice match for the Saitama Wild Knights in Japan, marking his comeback from a shoulder injury suffered during last year’s Japanese League One final.
Erasmus will also be closely monitoring the condition of two-time World Cup winner Steven Kitshoff, who underwent neck surgery last year. It is understood that Kitshoff will see a specialist next week to assess his recovery.

While the surgery was successful, concerns remain about his long-term availability. The 83-cap prop was injured in September during a Currie Cup clash for Western Province.
Meanwhile, Eben Etzebeth is still recovering from a concussion but the Sharks expect him back soon. Other sidelined Sharks players include Aphelele Fassi, who will undergo ankle surgery, and Andre Esterhuizen, ruled out for three months with a knee injury.
