Locals dig in for Barrydale’s field of dreams

Barrydale residents, aided by R50 000 from CapeTalk’s John Maytham and Stormers team sponsors DHL, are transforming the local rugby field into a source of pride for the community.

The funds were raised in September when radio host Maytham auctioned two tickets to the Springboks-All Blacks clash in Cape Town, raising R25 000, which DHL matched.

Stormers coach John Dobson added two 2024-25 season tickets and official kit, further boosting the initiative aimed at supporting Barrydale’s rugby clubs, the Flying Eagles and Stryders.

The project, led by Conroy Williams of Barrydale Fight Club, saw enthusiastic support from local businesses like Potgieter Brothers Earthmovers and residents, particularly women from the Community Work Programme (CWP).

On 10 December, the CWP women began distributing soil supplied by Southey Transport. “It’s a grievance in our eyes how the field looks,” CWP worker Marika Bron was quoted by News62. “Even though we support different clubs, we thought it would be a good idea to help here.”

Local advocate Stefanus Nel praised their efforts, saying, “The value women add to the community should never be underestimated. Thank you for what you do.”
