Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has suggested not playing a last-16 game at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium is “maybe a positive” after his side slipped to a defeat against Benfica that cost them top spot in Group C at the 2025 Club World Cup.
The Portuguese team held off a torrent of second-half pressure from Bayern to leapfrog the reigning German champions through Andreas Schjelderup’s early strike in their closing group stage game.
“I’ve got to be honest – with the pitch and the heat, I feared that this wouldn’t go as fluidly as it does normally,” Kompany told DAZN after overseeing a first defeat in 10 games.
“That first breath – that first time you’re confronted with the heat – sometimes it’s like this. It wouldn’t have been the first time.”

Bayern Munich ‘paid price’ vs Benfica
With Bayern behind to Norway winger Schjelderup’s 13th-minute strike, Kompany sent on attacking trio Harry Kane, Michael Olise and Joshua Kimmich at half-time.
Midfielder Kimmich was denied a long-range equaliser because Kane was well offside, and Konrad Laimer struck the far post after collecting Thomas Muller’s pass inside the box on the right.
Eagles goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin was in inspired form, including a close-range save from Aleksandar Pavlovic and a late stop to thwart Leroy Sane in a one-on-one after Kane played a defence-splitting pass.
“I was still confident for the second half,” said Kompany. “We created so much in the second half and played really well.
“We had one-on-ones with the goalkeeper and other chances. If you don’t take them, eventually you pay the price.”

2025 Club World Cup: Bayern vs Flamengo
While Benfica will return to Charlotte for their last-16 game, Bayern will take on Brazilian leaders Flamengo in Florida on Sunday (21:00 BST).
“It was either going to be Flamengo or Chelsea, so it was going to be tough,” said Kompany. “We won’t take anything negative into that game.
“Maybe a positive is that we won’t play in Charlotte any more. We were dominant, we created more chances. We didn’t win and we can’t afford for that to happen, but we can still take a lot of momentum into the next game.”
Harry Kane: Bayern substitution ‘the plan’
Kompany was asked about the introduction of Kane – last season’s Bundesliga top scorer – at half-time, with the England captain using an ice bucket to cope with the heat.
“It was the plan,” replied Kompany, whose side beat Auckland City 10-0 and Boca Juniors 2-1 in their first two games.
“I’d rather finish strong because I knew the game could start slowly. We absolutely did finish strong, but I can’t take anything from this game other than the performance in the second half, because we didn’t get the result.”
