During a recent trip to Mumbai, Williamson participated in a special event with young cricketers as part of JioStar ‘s “Star Nahi Far” initiative – an outreach program aimed at inspiring the next generation of Indian cricketers. In a fun Q&A session with kids, Williamson was asked a light-hearted but insightful question:
“If you could borrow one shot from any cricketer, which one would it be?” a fan asked.
The New Zealand star didn’t even pause before answering:
“I think it would be Virat Kohli’s flick off his legs,” Williamson replied.
As the session continued, the conversation shifted toward cricketing idols. Williamson took a nostalgic turn, reminiscing about his childhood days and revealing the cricketer he grew up idolizing.
“My cricketing idol was a guy who played at the maidan we were just at. Sachin Tendulkar—he’s the legend. I still see him playing sometimes,” Williamson concluded.
For Williamson, whose own batting has often been compared to classical greats, to publicly praise both Tendulkar and Kohli shows how deeply Indian batters have shaped the global cricketing narrative across generations.

From IPL star to sidelines: Williamson’s absence in 2025
Despite being one of the most consistent and respected batters of this era, Williamson will not feature in the 2025 edition of the IPL. He went unsold at the mega auction held in Saudi Arabia in November 2024 – a surprise to many cricket enthusiasts and pundits.
From 2015 to 2024, Williamson was a vital presence in the IPL, first with Sunrisers Hyderabad, where he captained the side, and later with Gujarat Titans. Across 79 matches, he amassed 2,128 runs, often anchoring innings under pressure and playing the role of a sheet anchor with incredible patience and composure.
His absence in IPL 2025 marks the end of an important chapter in the tournament’s history. However, his cricket journey is far from over. While IPL doors may be closed this season, Williamson is all set to make his return to franchise cricket through the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, where he will represent the Karachi Kings. His presence is expected to bring a tactical edge to the side, and his mentoring capabilities will be invaluable for younger players in the squad.
