Former England National Cricket Team batter James Vince has lashed out at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) for their policy to not allow players in overseas leagues. He said that it didn’t seem right as to why players are allowed in IPL and not PSL.
The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), in the last few months, have gone hard on their players. This is because the players prioritize playing for the England National Cricket Team and as well as in England’s domestic cricket over the overseas leagues.
England players will be only allowed to play in the IPL
The ECB changed their NOC policy, according to which players won’t be given NOCs for the leagues that will be colliding with the English summer unless the player is on a white-ball-only deal with their country. The county will be clashing with the Pakistan Super League, and hence, no player will be part of it.
England players will also not be allowed to play the tournament which will clash with the schedule of Vitality Blast and the Hundred. This means that players would find it tough to play in Major League Cricket, Canada’s Global T20 League, and the Lanka Premier League, as well as the Caribbean Premier League.
However, England players will be allowed only to play in the IPL. The ECB has made policy for all the other leagues except for the IPL. This speaks about their relationship with BCCI as even the main players of the England National Cricket Team will be playing the IPL.
So that was a big one where it just didn’t seem right that, you know, why the IPL and not the PSL? – James Vince
James Vince talked about the same and fumed at the ECB, saying that PCB is shorter than IPL and, hence, players would’ve missed less domestic cricket. He said that the ECB has a special relationship with BCCI, and it saw 25 and 30 canceling their Red Bull contracts. Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, he said:
“PSL is a shorter competition, so if you’re going to play in that, you’re probably missing less domestic cricket than if you’re going to the IPL. So that was a big one where it just didn’t seem right that, you know, why the IPL and not the PSL?
“I guess it’s got to be something to do with relationships between the ECB and PCB and BCCIs as to why they’ve come up with that rule. I guess had another 25, 30 English players been picked up on decent contracts, whether there would have been more people kind of forgo their Red Bull contract to take up that offer.”
I don’t think it helps English players who are contracted for all formats in the draft – James Vince
James Vince further talked about the challenges of being allowed to play in the PSL over the NOC issues. He said that team management at Karachi was hesitant to pick players in the draft. He added:
“I don’t think it helps English players who are contracted for all formats in the draft because I know we’ve had a bit of dialogue with our owners and team management at Karachi. They were concerned about picking someone up in the draft and then the NEC being denied. So it doesn’t help English domestic players in the draft either,” said James Vince.
