The Springboks may boast superior firepower and form heading into their two-Test series against Italy, but Rassie Erasmus’ men would be wise not to underestimate the Azzurri – especially with a few dangerous individuals in their ranks, including one born on South African soil.
Italy arrive in the Republic fresh from a commanding 73–6 victory over Namibia in Windhoek, where they crossed the try line 11 times.
Still, context is key.
All have been rested as Italy look to expand their player base heading into the next World Cup cycle. No fewer than seven uncapped players have been included for this tour.
The Italian coaching team, under former Argentina flyhalf Gonzalo Quesada, have made it clear that the goal of this trip is squad development rather than silverware. Even so, there are several names in the squad who could trouble the Boks if given space and opportunity.
One of them is Ross Vintcent, no stranger to the South African rugby culture. Born in Johannesburg and schooled at Bishops in Cape Town, the dynamic Exeter Chiefs loose forward was raised in Dubai before moving to Italy, where he joined the national U20 setup.
State of the Boks: Milestones beckon in blockbuster season
In the back row, Lorenzo Cannone is another standout. A physical, hard-carrying No 8 with an insatiable work rate, Cannone has become a mainstay in Italy’s pack since bursting onto the scene in 2022.
Then there’s Tommaso Menoncello, one of the rising stars of European rugby. The powerful inside centre is known for his sharp handling, strong defence, and ability to break the line. He’ll be eyeing a big performance against the Bok midfield pairing of Damian de Allende and Jesse Kriel.
Yes, South Africa start as clear favourites – and rightly so. But Italy’s blend of youthful ambition and seasoned grit means they can’t be taken lightly. Erasmus and his coaching team have seen enough in international rugby to know that complacency is a dangerous opponent.
The first Test kicks off at Loftus Versfeld in Pretoria this Saturday, with the second Test to be played at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha the following weekend.
