The Hurricanes have agreed to terms on a new contract with Ngatungane Punivai, who has emerged as a reliable starting option on the right wing for the team this season.
The physical Lower Hutt product’s breakout season has helped the club move on from the dangerous duo of Salesi Rayasi and Josh Moorby, who both moved on to the Top 14 in France after starring for the Wellington outfit in recent years.
Punivai, 26, came through the Crusaders system with Christ’s College, where he was recognised as a leader and rewarded with the team’s captaincy.
Returning to represent his roots in 2024, Punivai debuted for the Hurricanes against the Melbourne Rebels, and has since established his versatility in both the midfield as well as on the wing.
“It’s a proud moment for me and my family to be staying with the Hurricanes for a couple more seasons. We love this club and feel right at home here. I’m looking forward to continuing my growth on and off the field and I’m also super excited to see what we can achieve over the next few years,” Punivai said
The Hurricanes have endured a rocky start to their 2025 campaign, but after a number of injury-plagued seasons, Punivai has proven a dependable option for the club and has claimed three tries for his efforts.
“Super excited to have Ngane extend, he’s playing the best rugby of his career this season and he’s done a huge amount of work on getting his body right and trusting his body to play at the level he’s playing at. He had a tough couple years with injury and getting the consistency, but he has found that sweet spot,” Head Coach Clark Laidlaw added.
“Originally from here, it’s great that him and his family have been able to settle down in Wellington and it’s great to have him stay and play for his hometown. We’re hopeful he will continue his good form and we’re looking forward to seeing what he can do in the next couple of seasons.”
