The countdown has begun for the high-voltage Test series between England and India, beginning June 20 at Headingley, Leeds. The upcoming red-ball battle has already stirred excitement among cricket lovers, especially with a new era dawning for Indian Test cricket. All eyes will be on Shubman Gill, who is set to lead India in his first full series as Test captain.
While the anticipation is high, fans are also nostalgic, as this will be India’s first Test series without Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom recently announced their retirement from the longest format. Their absence marks the end of an illustrious chapter and signals a fresh start with a younger core taking responsibility in England’s challenging conditions.
Harbhajan Singh highlights why Shardul Thakur should play over Nitish Reddy
Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has weighed in on a key selection debate ahead of the first Test — whether to pick Shardul Thakur or Nitish Reddy in the playing XI. Speaking to PTI, Harbhajan made a strong case for Shardul, citing the need for a bowler who can contribute with the bat at the crucial No. 8 spot. He acknowledged Nitish Reddy’s potential but noted the limited exposure of his bowling in top-level cricket, particularly the IPL.
“India needs a bowler who can bat a bit. The batting line-up extends till No. 7, and at No. 8, you need someone who can take wickets and contribute with the bat—not just a batsman who bowls a little. That’s where I think Shardul has an edge over Nitish Reddy. Nitish is a proper batsman who can definitely bowl, but we haven’t seen much of his bowling in the IPL,” Harbhajan said.

Team India searching for the perfect balance
With conditions in England often favouring swing and seam, India’s team management faces the challenge of selecting the right combination. The squad features a healthy mix of youth and experience, giving selectors a variety of options to strategize effectively.
The experienced trio of KL Rahul, Jasprit Bumrah, and Kuldeep Yadav are expected to play vital roles in guiding the younger members. Rising talents like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Prasidh Krishna, and skipper Gill will look to seize this opportunity to establish their Test credentials overseas.
