Fluminense and Mamelodi Sundowns played out a goalless draw in Miami on Wednesday, with the result confirming the Brazilian side’s progress to the last 16 as group runners-up.
In what was the final round of group games in Group F, Fluminense had the chance to go through as group winners with victory, but Renato Gaucho’s team could not find the breakthrough against their impressive opponents from South Africa.
The reigning South African Premiership champions and CAF Champions League finalists far from disgraced themselves against the South American giants and largely dominated proceedings in the first half.

A win for either team would have seen them go through at the expense of the other, but a point was all that was required for Gaucho’s men, who will now meet the winners of Group E, which could be River Plate, Inter Milan or Monterrey.
For the Sundowns, despite exiting at the first hurdle, they showed real pedigree across their three matches, beating Ulsan in the opening before giving Borussia Dortmund – who qualified for the knockout stages as group winners – an almighty scare in a 4-3 defeat last weekend.
