Friedkin Group completes Everton takeover

The Friedkin Group has officially taken majority control of Everton, marking the end of Farhad Moshiri’s tenure.

The deal, valued at over £400 million, makes Everton the 10th Premier League team to come under majority American ownership.

The agreement between Moshiri and the Texas-based Friedkin Group was initially reached on September 23, but final regulatory approval from the Premier League was required before the takeover could be completed.

Led by chairman Dan Friedkin, the Friedkin Group also owns Serie A side AS Roma.

As part of the new leadership structure, Friedkin is expected to serve as chairman of Everton’s board, with Marc Watts taking on the role of executive chairman, overseeing the club’s daily operations.

In an open letter to fans, Friedkin expressed his excitement about the acquisition: “I take immense pride in welcoming one of England’s most historic football clubs to our global family, the Friedkin Group. Everton represents a proud legacy, and we are honoured to become custodians of this great institution.

“Whilst we are new to the club, we fully understand the vital role Everton plays in local culture, history, and the lives of Evertonians here and around the world.

“We are deeply committed to honouring this legacy while contributing positively to the community, economy, and people of this remarkable city.”

Farhad Moshiri, a British-Iranian businessman, first purchased a 49.9% stake in Everton in 2016 before increasing his ownership to 94.1% in 2022.

His tenure was marked by significant financial investment but also instability, as Everton struggled both on and off the pitch.

Everton, a club that have not been relegated since the 1953–54 season, has endured three consecutive years of poor Premier League finishes, ending 16th, 17th, and 15th in the past campaigns.

Currently sitting in 16th place, the team faces another challenging season under manager Sean Dyche.

The Friedkin Group’s representatives are expected to attend Everton’s upcoming match against second-placed Chelsea at Goodison Park on Sunday.
