India have made an emphatic start to the five-match Test series, ending Day 1 of the first game firmly in control after a commanding batting performance against England. On a surface offering little assistance to the bowlers, Indian batters laid the foundation with Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill stole the show with brilliant centuries. The visitors finished the first day with 359 runs with the loss of 3 wickets.
Yashasvi Jaiswal and Shubman Gill help India dominate Day 1
After being asked to bat first under clear skies and bright sunshine, the visitors made full use of the conditions. Starting with a solid 91-run opening stand between KL Rahul and centurion Jaiswal, the Indian batters never seemed out of control. The highlight of the innings came in the final session when skipper Shubman Gill—who had struggled in overseas Tests—broke the trend with a brilliant century.
With late half century from Rishabh Pant, India appeared firmly in command heading into Day 2. On the other hand, England’s bowlers looked largely ineffective on what appears to be a belter of a batting surface. Despite grabbing two quick wickets before lunch, they continued to leak runs at a brisk pace throughout the day. The lone bright spot was skipper
Ben Stokes shines as England seek answers on flat pitch
The English side needs to find some clue with the ball, with significant Indian batting still to come. Apart from skipper Ben Stokes, the other bowlers also need to step up and offer more support if they are to pull their team back into the contest. Stokes, who picked up two key wickets and led from the front in an otherwise tough outing for the hosts.
The home side must sharpen their fielding and employ strategic bowling plans, such as varying pace and setting attacking fields, to create pressure and induce mistakes from the Indian batsmen. With the pitch expected to remain good on the second day, the match is expected to bring some high-class cricket.

Pretty dreadful day from England today. Wrong decision at the toss bowled poorly, and the bowling attack is one of the weakest I can remember! Indian batsman played well, but it was hardly a contest! #ENGvIND

360/3 on the opening day of an away Test. We’re not used to such scorecards by India off late but this is refreshing. India have the bowling as compared to England to create something out of this docile pitch, so bat long enough to give England a tough time with the bat#ENGvIND

Really not sure what people expected with this bowling attack? Never taking 20 wickets. Hopefully have Atkinson and Archer fit for the next game and Wood fit at some point if we’re lucky. #ENGvIND
