A former Springbok coach is set to be appointed as Japan’s new defence coach.
Rugbyjp.com reports that Gary Gold replaces David Kidwell, who exited the role after spending the latter half of the season at Leicester Tigers.
Japan head coach Eddie Jones confirmed earlier this month that Kidwell had “retired” from the role.
Gold, who was a Springbok assistant coach under Peter de Villiers and head coach of the USA Eagles, has been helping out at Japan’s training camp in Miyazaki ahead of their match against the New Zealand Maori and a two-Test series against Wales in July.
The 57-year-old South African is expected to finalise his deal with the Japan RFU soon and will link up with former Springbok captain Victor Matfield, who is working with the Brave Blossoms as a technical adviser.
Gold has previous experience in Japan, having coached the Kobe Steelers to first place on the 2014-15 Top League log before suffering a semi-final defeat. He then joined the Sharks as director of rugby.
