The opening Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy at Headingley, Leeds, has already delivered gripping cricket and emotional flashpoints. As England and India locked horns from June 20, 2025, both teams displayed their strengths in a contest that has swung like a pendulum. After a dominant Indian batting display, Day 3 saw tempers flare and momentum shift, epitomized by Mohammed Siraj’s aggressive celebration upon dismissing England captain Ben Stokes—a moment that electrified the crowd and reignited India’s charge.
Mohammed Siraj’s passionate celebration after dismissing Ben Stokes on Day 3 of 1st Test
The morning session of Day 3 saw a pivotal moment that electrified the Headingley crowd. With England steadily building a reply, Siraj produced a moment of raw emotion and intensity. Bowling with his trademark aggression, Siraj tempted England captain Stokes into a wide cut. Stokes, seeking to drive the momentum, only managed to edge the ball behind to Rishabh Pant, who made no mistake with the catch.
What followed was vintage Siraj. As Stokes, visibly frustrated, threw his bat up in the air, Siraj fixed him with a fierce glare and an aggressive celebration, a release of pent-up energy after a tough grind with the old ball and mounting pressure on the Indian attack. The wicket was more than just a statistic; it was a statement, breaking a crucial partnership and injecting life into India’s campaign at a critical juncture. Siraj’s celebration, intense and unfiltered, captured the spirit of a bowler who thrives on big moments and isn’t afraid to wear his heart on his sleeve.

Momentum swings between England and India in first session
The match narrative has been shaped by stellar performances and sudden twists. India’s first innings was built on the back of three commanding centuries—Shubman Gill (147), Rishabh Pant (134), and Yashasvi Jaiswal (101)—as they posted a daunting 471. England’s bowlers, especially Stokes and Josh Tongue, toiled hard, with both picking up four wickets each, but not before India’s top order had inflicted significant damage.
England’s reply started shakily, losing Zak Crawley early to Jasprit Bumrah. However, Ben Duckett (62) and Ollie Pope (106) steadied the ship, with Pope’s fluent century and a 122-run stand for the second wicket putting the hosts in a strong position by lunch on Day 2. Bumrah continued to be India’s spearhead, dismissing Duckett and Joe Root, but England’s intent was clear as they kept up with the required run rate.
By the time Siraj removed Stokes, England were 276/5, still trailing India by nearly 200 runs but with Harry Brook (who soon reached his half-century) and Jamie Smith at the crease. The match remained finely poised, with India needing quick wickets to press home their advantage and England looking to bat deep into Day 3 as England at the end of the lunch are at 327/5.
