Davies injury setback keeps Postecoglou in ‘tight spot’

Depleted Tottenham will be without Ben Davies at home to Wolves on Sunday after the defender suffered a setback during his return from a hamstring injury.

Wales international Davies has not featured since Spurs’ 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth on December 5, with manager Ange Postecoglou expecting the 31-year-old to miss an extra “couple of weeks”.

Centre-back Radu Dragusin is a doubt after being forced off during Tottenham’s 1-0 defeat at Nottingham Forest on Thursday, compounding an injury list that includes Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero.

Spurs vs Wolves: ‘Another test’

“We are in a tough spot and have been for a while,” said Postecoglou. “The nature of football and the fixture schedule means we have always been on a fine line. It’s another test for us.”

Tottenham’s only clean sheet in their last nine games came at bottom side Southampton, who have scored four goals fewer than any other team in the top flight.

Postecoglou, who has moved 18-year-old Archie Gray back from midfield to defence to help ease the situation, said it was “a bit early to tell” whether Dragusin would be involved at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“He tweaked his ankle and felt like he couldn’t continue,” the Australian added after Anthony Elanga scored the only goal of the game. “We have to wait and see.”

Tottenham results

Spurs have lost four of their last five league matches, with their 5-0 victory at the Saints on December 15 representing their only win in their last six in the top flight.

Wolves won 2-0 at home to Manchester United on Thursday to record consecutive victories since the appointment of Vitor Pereira as manager.

They are now the eighth-highest scorers in the division and a point clear of third-bottom Leicester City.
