Boks must win in NZ to stay top of the world

Victor Matfield believes the Springboks’ performances in New Zealand will decide whether they retain No 1 world ranking this year.

Speaking on the Rugby Rivals podcast, the 2007 World Cup winner noted that the Springboks have two Tests away to the All Blacks, as well as trips to Ireland and France in a season that could shake up the global rankings.

“South Africa’s got a tough year,” said Matfield. “We play New Zealand away from home twice, then Ireland away and France away at the end of the year. So it’s a very difficult year for South Africa.”

The Springbok centurion, who initially backed New Zealand to finish 2025 ranked first, revised his prediction – suggesting the Boks could still stay on top if they beat the All Blacks in Auckland (6 September) or in Wellington (13 September).

“If we win one there, I think there’s a chance South Africa will beat New Zealand at the Holy Grail in Auckland. I think they’re going all out for that game. If they beat them, they will still be No 1,” he said.

Matfield’s comments came in response to a discussion around the battle for the No 1 ranking, which will determine the top seedings for the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

He said it was telling that South Africa, now two-time world champions, are being chased by the rest of the rugby world.

“We’re all chasing South Africa now,” added co-host Sir John Kirwan. “They are leading world rugby in innovation and in titles. So everyone’s coming for South Africa.”

Matfield agreed with the legendary All Black: “They’ve been coming for four years … but not only do we have a hard year, everyone’s coming for us. They want to beat the best.”
