Augustus double-dips in Euro cups launch

Ulster-bound Juarno Augustus’ second-half brace powered the Northampton Saints to a convincing win against Castres in the Investec Champions Cup on Saturday.

– Three second-half tries saw the Northampton Saints hammer Castres 38-8 at Franklin’s Gardens in round 1. Augustus scored two tries in 20 minutes for Saints as they cruised to victory. In the next round Saints face the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld and will look to keep top spot in pool 3.

– Former Stormers utility back Dillyn Leyds played the full 80 on the wing as La Rochelle toppled Bath 24-20 at the Recreation Ground. Springbok prop Thomas du Toit, scrumhalf Louis Schreuder, tighthead Francois van Wyk and No 8 Jaco Coetzee all featured for the English Premiership leaders in the loss at home.

Jacques Vermeulen captained Exeter Chiefs in a 39-21 defeat to the Sharks at Kings Park on Saturday. Winless Exeter are rock bottom in the English Premiership and in fifth place in group 1 of the Champions Cup.

Thaakir Abrahams opened the scoring for Munster while Dian Beuler packed down at prop in a 33-7 win against Stade Francais. Abrahams was awarded the man of the match, while Joe Jonas started at fullback for Stade Francais.

– Five South Africans featured for Sale Sharks in a 38-19 reverse to the United Rugby Championship champions Glasgow Warriors at Scotstoun Stadium. Flyhalf Rob du Preez captained Sale while Ernst van Rhyn and Hyron Andrews partnered at lock, and they were joined by bruisers Jean-Luc and Dan du Preez. Former Sharks loose forward Henco Venter started at No 8 for Glasgow.

– Four second-half tries from Bordeaux Begles cemented a 42-28 comeback win against Leicester Tigers at the Stade Chaban-Delmas. Replacement prop Carlu Sadie made an impact off the bench for Bordeaux while flanker Hanro Liebenberg featured for Leicester Tigers.

– Ulster suffered the largest defeat of round 1, sinking 61-21 at defending champions Toulouse. Former Blitzboks and Sharks winger Werner Kok ran out for Ulster, playing the full 80 minutes.

Benhard Janse van Rensburg dotted down for Bristol Bears in a 35-12 loss to Leinster. RG Snyman came on for the last 35 minutes, replacing Ireland international Joe McCarthy at lock.

Challenge Cup:
– Gloucester held on to secure a narrow 15-10 win over Edinburgh in round 1 of the Challenge Cup at the Kingsholm Stadium on Friday. Former Lions flanker Ruan Ackermann played the full 80 at No 8 for Gloucester, while Boan Venter packed down at loosehead prop for Edinburgh.

Pieter Scholtz and Uzair Cassiem started for Aviron Bayonnais as they edged Scarlets 17-16 at the Stade Jean-Dauger in Bayonne on Saturday. Cassiem, capped eight times by the Springboks, ran out at No 8 while Scholtz started at tighthead prop. Former Western Province flanker Jarrod Taylor lined up for Scarlets.

– Three second-half tries saw Section Paloise claim a first round 32-19 win against Newcastle Falcons in Pau on Sunday. Former Stormers and Sharks hooker Dan Jooste started for Section Paloise, while Sebastian de Chaves scrummed down at lock for the Falcons.

– The Lions suffered their third consecutive defeat in all competitions with a 30-14 loss to Ospreys in Llanelli on Sunday. Bad weather forced a late venue switch to the Parc y Scarlets after the Ospreys’ home stadium suffered structural damage. Daniel Kasende, who signed for Ospreys after the Cheetahs’ 2024 Currie Cup campaign, joined replacement prop Tom Botha, also formerly of the Cheetahs, in recording a win against their familiar rivals.
