Flanker Marco van Staden says the Springboks are targeting a much-improved effort at the breakdown when they face Italy in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
The Boks beat an understrength Azzurri 42-24 at Loftus last week, but were well below par. Van Staden is one of just four survivors from that starting XV as coach Rassie Erasmus rotates his squad for the second Test.
“They placed a big emphasis on the breakdowns last week and did well to disrupt us in that department,” said Van Staden. “So we have to get it right this week to deliver a good performance.
“The intensity of our training sessions this week was good, and I believe it prepared us well for the weekend. One thing’s for sure – we know where we need to improve, and we’ve been working on that.

“Italy showed last week what intensity they can play with,” he added. “That performance would have given them confidence, so we are prepared for another big battle this weekend.”
The 29-year-old also had special praise for Bulls teammate Cobus Wiese, who is set to make his Test debut off the bench.
“Cobus is a physical player, and he deserves this opportunity,” said Van Staden. “I don’t think it gets more special than achieving this milestone in the same team as your brother [Jasper].”

Saturday’s Test will also mark a major milestone for Willie le Roux, who will earn his 100th cap. Van Staden says the team is determined to make the occasion memorable for the veteran fullback.
“Willie is a great team man and player, and he certainly deserves this achievement. As a team, it’s our responsibility to make it a special day for him, as well as the debutants.”
