The Test match in Kitakyushu was just seconds old when the game was stopped
Wales’ Test match versus Japan was halted just seconds into proceedings due to an injury to Ben Carter.
With just 27 seconds on the clock, referee Damian Schneider blew his whistle after lock Carter took a heavy blow to the head in contact.
There was immediate concern for the Dragons lock, with medical teams quickly attending to him on the pitch in Kitakyushu.
The medical team quickly called for the stretcher and after a pause of around four to five minutes, Carter was carried off the field to applause from around the stadium.
He was replaced by James Ratti.
“If you are just joining us, worrying signs for Ben Carter, bang to the head in the first minute, he will not return to the field of play, that’s a given,” said BBC commentator Gareth Rees-Owen.
In the oppressive afternoon heat in Japan, the stoppage won’t have helped Wales in their preparation.
Co-commentator Richie Rees added: “It’s how you manage your energy levels now. Really important energy levels are high just before kick-off. We’ve had three or four-minute break already and you have to generate your own energy levels.”
In the studio, former Wales fly-half Rhys Patchell said: “Japan are a team that comes out of the blocks very quickly, and this could’ve possibly taken the wind out of their sails.
“This is a great opportunity for James Ratti, he has the opportunity to get right into the game from the start.”
Matt Sherratt and Co will be out to end Wales’ miserable run of 17-straight Test match defeats.
They have taken an early lead through Ben Thomas.
