Aitana Bonmati is “so eager” to play in Spain’s opening Women’s Euro 2025 match despite being discharged from hospital just days ago, according to head coach Montse Tome.
Bonmati received treatment for viral meningitis after being admitted to hospital in Madrid at the end of June but was discharged on Sunday, just days before the start of the tournament, which kicked off on Wednesday.
The two-time Ballon d’Or winning midfielder is a key figure in Tome’s squad as they set their sights on another international trophy after triumph at the 2023 World Cup, where they beat England in the final.
The 27-year-old was picked as winner of the Golden Ball for the player of the tournament in Australia and New Zealand two years ago, and Tome has relayed Bonmati’s desire to turn out for her country in their Group B opener against Portugal in Bern on Thursday.

However, the Spain boss warned against rushing the Barcelona star back to action too soon.
“We have to slow her down,” said Tome. “She’s [Bonmati] so eager – we have to hold her back a bit. Her health is the first and most important thing.”
Despite remaining a doubt for Thursday’s Iberian clash, Tome indicated Bonmati’s recovery was encouraging.
“According to the medical staff, her progress is positive,” Tome added.
“Health comes first, and she’s been able to complete all the tasks required.”
