Stormers boss John Dobson understands flyhalf Manie Libbok’s decision to leave for Japan and insists the door will always be open for his return.
Dobson addressed the media in a virtual press conference this week to clarify a number of key developments concerning the Stormers and Western Province setups.
Among the main talking points was Libbok’s future and the implications of his exit for the Cape franchise.
The 27-year-old is reportedly on his way to Japan, where he’s being lined up by the Hanazono Liners as a replacement for Wallaby veteran Quade Cooper in a potentially potent halfback partnership with former Aussie scrumhalf Will Genia.

Despite Libbok being under contract with the Stormers until 2027, Dobson explained the reasoning behind allowing him to leave.
“We’ve had a fantastic journey with him. He’s a massive loss. Manie got an eye-watering offer from Japan and it’s a life-changing amount of money. It’ll change his whole family’s life. Manie goes with blessing, thanks and an open invitation to come back,” said Dobson.
With Libbok moving on, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu has stepped into the No 10 jersey as the Stormers’ primary playmaker, with Damian Willemse also capable of covering the role when needed.
However, both are expected to be away with the Springboks during the international window, which poses a depth challenge for Dobson and new WP head coach Labeeb Levy at Currie Cup level.

That leaves Jurie Mathee and Jean-Luc du Plessis as the only recognised flyhalves in the system, a concern that Dobson acknowledged but one he says the union is prepared to manage without rushing into the market.
Libbok will be in action for the Springboks as they take on the Barbarians at the Cape Town Stadium on Saturday. He starts from the bench.
