In the opening match of the three-match T20I series between South Africa Women and West Indies Women, the Proteas secured a comfortable victory over the hosts in Bridgetown, Barbados. South Africa put in a commanding all-round performance to take a 1–0 lead in the series.
Tazmin Brits sizzles with the bat
After winning the toss, Windies invited the visitors to bat first, and it went really well for them. After the early wickets of skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Marizanne Kapp, opener Tazmin Brits maintained a composed demeanour. She kept the scoreboard ticking with her brilliant batting, scoring in all parts of the ground. In a blistering knock of 98 runs off 63 deliveries, she hit 9 fours and four sixes. Apart from Brits, no other batter was able to cross the 25-run mark.
For Windies, the story was not very pleasing while bowling first. Pacer Jahzara Claxton was the key highlight, picking up 3 wickets for 39 runs in her four-over spell. Afy Fletcher and Aaliyah Alleyne also chipped in with one wicket each, showing some promise with the ball. However, the Windies bowlers were too expensive throughout the innings, much courtesy of Kapp’s aggressive intent and quick-fire knock.
West Indies’ falters again under pressure
Chasing a challenging target of 184 runs, the story remained the same for West Indies. Their batters once again showed no intent and struggled with poor form. Skipper Hayley Matthews got a start but couldn’t get going before being dismissed by Kapp. However, left-hander Jannillea Glasgow showed some fightback down the order with her brisk half-century of 53 runs, but it wasn’t enough.
With the ball, skipper Kapp once again showcased her all-round abilities. She picked up 2 important wickets, giving away 27 runs in her 3 overs. Her dismissals included Hayley and Qiana Joseph. The Proteas used seven bowling options, and all delivered. Nadine de Klerk, Ayabonga Khaka, and Nonkululeko Mlaba each took one wicket. The effort led to a huge victory of Proteas by 50 runs.
