Wessam Abou Ali scored an own goal and substitute Jose Manuel Lopez struck as Palmeiras ended a goal drought in Group A of the 2025 Club World Cup to beat Al-Ahly for their first win in a match suspended because of the weather in Atlanta.
With no goals in the first half, the group had started by going almost four hours combined without the ball hitting the back of the net before prolific Al-Ahly striker Ali glanced a cross into his own net four minutes after the break.
Having come on at the interval, striker Lopez collected Mauricio’s pass through the centre, charged through and produced a cool low finish to double the Brazilian club’s advantage in the 59th minute.
There was a delay of around 45 minutes shortly after Lopez’s goal, with players and fans advised to take cover from adverse conditions at the MetLife Stadium.

Palmeiras vs Al Ahly: Group A up and running
Following Al-Ahly’s 0-0 draw with Miami and Palmeiras’ stalemate with Porto, the group was heading for another stalemate at half-time.
The main incident during the first half was an overturned red card for Palmeiras midfielder Raphael Veiga, who was initially sent off for a late tackle on Zizo.
English referee Anthony Taylor reduced the punishment to a yellow card following a pitchside monitor review, although that was only a temporary reprieve for Veiga on his 30th birthday because manager Abel Ferreira replaced the Brazilian with Mauricio at the interval, also bringing on Lopez for Vitor Roque.
The changes had the desired effect, starting when Palestine international Ali headed in Moreno’s excellent delivery and continuing with Lopez’s excellent run and strike from a breakaway.
“Nothing really happened in the first 45 minutes,” said Jose Riveiro, the new manager of the reigning Egyptian champions, speaking to DAZN.
“There was a slow beginning to the second half. There was one free-kick and then we couldn’t get rid of one ball. It was 50-50 at that time, but the game got away from us.”
Every angle of that GREAT counter by @Palmeiras 🐷
