A World Cup-winning Springbok and an SA-born speedster were awarded with places in the best XV of the opening round of the 2024-25 Investec Champions Cup.

The Sharks kept the South African flag flying in the first weekend of the EPCR competition, which saw defeats for the DHL Stormers and Vodacom Bulls, while the Cheetahs managed a draw and the Lions lost in the Challenge Cup.

Three Englishmen and two Irishmen feature in a star lineup dominated by the French, who have seven representatives. Australia back-row bruiser Pete Samu also cracked the nod.

The powerful Andre Esterhuizen earned a spot after playing a prominent role for the Sharks in a 39-21 victory against the Exeter Chiefs at Kings Park, while winger Thaakir Abrahams scored one of five tries for Munster in a bonus-point win over Stade Francais in Limerick.
