Tensions boiled over at the Rawalpindi Stadium in just the first over of Match 2 in Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2025, as seasoned pacer Mohammad Amir locked horns with young opener Saim Ayub in a tense face-off.
Mohammed Amir’s fiery confrontation with Saim Ayub sets the tone in PSL 2025 clash
The moment came when Ayub nudged a single off Amir’s second delivery and returned to the non-striker’s end. As Amir walked back to his run-up, he suddenly paused and turned toward Ayub, sparking an unexpected exchange of words. Cameras caught the visibly animated Amir speaking to Ayub, whose calm demeanor stood in stark contrast. Returning from an ankle injury that kept him out since early January, the 22-year-old showed remarkable restraint, refusing to be drawn into a war of words. The intense standoff, although brief, set an emotionally charged tone for what was already a high-pressure run chase.
Mohammad Amir wasn’t just spitting fire verbally – his bowling backed it up with brutal precision. The veteran pacer struck a psychological and tactical blow on Peshawar Zalmi by removing their talismanic skipper Babar Azam for a golden duck in the very first over, triggering celebrations in the Quetta Gladiators’ camp. Not done yet, Amir intensified the heat on Ayub – beating him on the first ball, chirping after the second, and continuing to needle the youngster through the over. Ayub, though under pressure, steadied himself to bring up a gritty 50 off 38 balls. However, Amir’s relentless energy prevailed as he dismissed the left-hander just one ball after he reached the milestone. The 32-year-old finished with sensational figures of 2 for 11 in just 2.1 overs, a display of dominance both in performance and presence.

Ayub’s lone battle amid Peshwar Zalmi’s collapse against Quetta Gladiators
Earlier, the Gladiators delivered a clinical performance with both bat and ball to register an emphatic 80-run win over Zalmi. After being put in to bat, the Gladiators’ top order came out with aggressive intent. Skipper Saud Shakeel anchored the innings with a calm 59 off 42, while Finn Allen’s explosive 53 off just 25 balls lit up the powerplay. Kusal Mendis (35 not out off 14) and Rilee Rossouw (21 not out off 10) applied the finishing touches to power the team to a mammoth 216. In reply, Peshawar’s batting lineup crumbled for 136 only, with only Ayub resisting the inevitable. The star with the ball, however, was Abrar Ahmed, who spun a web around the Zalmi batters to finish with a brilliant 4-wicket haul.
