England head coach John Mitchell has called 12 players into his latest training squad as the Red Roses continue their Women’s Six Nations preparations without their Premiership Women’s Rugby (PWR) finalists.
Bristol Bears teammates Christiana Balogun, Delaney Burns, Simi Pam and Reneeqa Bonner arrived in camp on Monday alongside Loughborough Lightning quartet Haineala Lutui, Amelia Williams, Lia Green and Carmel Morrall, Exeter Chiefs duo Maisy Allen and Nancy McGillivray, and Harlequins club mates Maddy Page and Tyla Shirley.
Of those who were added to the squad for the camp in Bristol, only Exeter flanker Allen and Bears second row Burns have previously been capped at Test level.
Seventeen of the 18 Gloucester-Hartpury and Saracens players named in last week’s training squad have returned to their clubs to prepare for the PWR final.
However, an agreement was reached with Gloucester-Hartpury to allow Jade Shekells to remain with the Red Roses as the Olympian continues her transition to 15s from sevens.
“We want to expose some of the developing future talent, and those who have performed well in the league, to the Red Roses environment,” Mitchell said.
“Their inclusion will not only aid their understanding of what it takes to become a Red Rose but will also prove beneficial for their development and the squad’s Guinness Women’s Six Nations preparations.”
On the pathway players included in the latest squad, Head of Women’s Performance Charlie Hayter added: “It is a fantastic opportunity for the girls coming in from the pathway to experience a senior international environment.
“The pathway is designed for aspirational players to maximise their potential and we believe exposing this group to the Red Roses will inspire and equip them to do so.”
England’s final Six Nations squad will be named on March 17, one day after the PWR final. The Red Roses begin their championship campaign against Italy in York on Sunday, March 23.
